Bento is a single portion home cooked or sometimes takeout meal presented in a box similar to the western lunchbox that originates in Japan. Traditionally, food like rice, fish, meat, pickled products, or vegetables are packed in the box. They range in style from ornate and expensive boxes to the simpler and reasonably priced ones. Bento boxes date back to the Kamakura Period (1185-1333) when they were used for cooked dried rice known as hoshi-ii During the 1980’s with the rising popularity of the microwave, bento boxes regained their popularity and are commonly seen in convenience stores to this day. Although disposable polystyrene bento boxes have superseded wood and metal boxes in popularity amongst the masses, handmade or mass produced bento boxes made from wood or metal maintain their position as a reminder of the cultural traditions of Feudal Era Japan.
