Chinese take-out boxes were first known as oyster pails. At a time when fresh oysters were relatively unexpressive, shucked oysters were placed in these boxes for sanitary and easy travel. As the price of fresh oysters increased, a surplus of these boxes occurred. By World War II, an increase in the popularity of pre prepared foods led to the widespread use of the oyster pail as a form of food transportation.
