Happi coats are straight-laced Japanese coat that usually made from cotton and often come in varying shades of brown and indigo. The first happi coats often represented a family crest or coat of arms and was worn by house servants. The crests of symbols of shops or organizations superseded family based happi coats over time. During the Edo period, even firefighters wore happi coats emblazoned with the firehouse or group they were associated with. |
