In ancient China, masks and facial makeup were worn by performers when they danced at ritual ceremonies. This was to frighten off ghosts and evil spirits and to relieve people of illnesses. These ritual ceremonies later transformed into theatrical performances. Eventually historical stories and legends were also brought onto the stage. Later, masks and facial makeup were used in Chinese operas. The main color in the makeup symbolizes the character’s personality. 2.25" length x 1.5" width. Set of 6. Imported from China.
