With the advent of Zen Buddhism in Japan during the 12th century, dry landscapes were cultivated to aid the understanding Zen concepts. These dry landscapes – known in the West as Zen gardens -- were to be used for meditation and to trigger deep contemplation. Two main elements of a Zen garden are stones that represent mountains and the crushed granite sand to form flowing water.
