Shotokan is a style of karate; there are many styles with different names, such as Wado-ryu, Wado-kai, Shito-ryu, Goju-ryu, Kempo-karate, and Okinawa-do. Shotokan is the largest style of karate that is officially sponsored and recognized by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture in Japan. The name Shotokan comes from the pen name of Gichin Funakoshi, the father of karate. Shoto was his pen name which he used as a poet in his younger days.
